So you want to make money blogging? Sweet. But before we talk about ads, SEO, and earnings, we need to start with the basics—getting your Blogger blog set up properly. If you’re brand new to blogging or Google AdSense, don’t worry. We’re taking it step by step, and today’s all about laying the foundation.
Why Blogger + AdSense?
Blogger is a free platform owned by Google. That means it plays really well with Google AdSense, the most beginner-friendly way to earn money from ads. As long as you follow the rules, getting approved is relatively straightforward. And since Blogger handles the hosting, you don’t need to mess with techy stuff like servers or plugins.
But—and this is important—your blog has to look legit and offer real value if you want AdSense to approve you. That’s where today’s setup matters.
Step 1: Create Your Blog (The Right Way)
Go to blogger.com, sign in with your Google account, and click “Create New Blog.”
Here are a few tips as you set things up:
-
Pick a niche — Don't just blog about “everything.” Choose a theme like personal finance, travel on a budget, skincare routines, or home cooking. Niches help with SEO and AdSense approval.
-
Choose a name — Keep it short, relevant, and memorable. Something like “Frugal Food Finds” is better than “My Random Food Blog.”
-
Custom domain (optional for now) — You can start with a
.blogspot.comdomain, but a custom domain (likewww.yourblog.com) looks more professional. We’ll talk more about that in a future lesson.
Step 2: Choose a Clean, Fast Theme
Skip the default Blogger themes—they look dated. Instead, go to Theme > Customize and choose something modern and responsive (mobile-friendly). A clean layout helps users stick around (good for SEO) and makes your blog look trustworthy (good for AdSense approval).
Here’s what to look for:
-
Mobile-friendly design
-
Easy-to-read fonts
-
Fast load times (we’ll test that later)
-
Room for ads (sidebar, header, in-post)
Step 3: Write 5–10 Quality Posts
You cannot get AdSense approval with an empty blog. Google wants to see original content that actually helps or entertains people. Before you even think about applying, have at least 5 solid blog posts published.
Each post should be:
-
600–1,000+ words
-
Original (not copied from anywhere)
-
Helpful or interesting (guides, tutorials, stories, reviews)
-
Easy to read (use headings, short paragraphs, and images)
Example: If your blog is about skincare, post ideas could include:
-
“5 Everyday Skincare Mistakes (And How to Fix Them)”
-
“My Simple Morning Routine for Acne-Prone Skin”
-
“Budget-Friendly Moisturizers That Actually Work”
Step 4: Create the Must-Have Pages
Google AdSense will not approve your site unless you have a few essential pages:
-
About — Who you are and what your blog is about
-
Contact — How people can reach you (email is fine)
-
Privacy Policy — Explains how you collect and use data (you can find free generators online)
-
Terms & Conditions (optional but recommended)
These pages build trust and show that you’re a real person behind the blog.
Step 5: Turn on Basic SEO Settings
Go to Settings > Meta tags and add a short blog description with relevant keywords. For example, if your blog is about minimalist travel, write something like:
“Tips and guides for traveling light, spending less, and seeing more of the world.”
Then turn on:
-
Custom robots.txt (we’ll fine-tune this later)
-
Custom robots header tags
-
Enable search description for posts
Don’t worry, you don’t need to understand all of this yet. Just flip the switches. We’ll dive deeper into SEO in the next lessons.
